You hold the wheel for the whole session: Watching someone else dock teaches you very little, so the boat is yours to drive for the length of the lesson and the captain talks rather than takes over.

Docking and Close Quarters Handling Lessons in Long Beach
Docking is what people are really asking about when they enquire about boat lessons. Ask any new owner what worries them and the answer is usually pulling into a slip or a busy fuel dock with people watching. It is not a lack of ability so much as a lack of repetition, and even seasoned boaters find tight spaces stressful when wind and current are involved.
The lesson starts with understanding why a boat behaves the way it does. It steers from the stern, closer to a forklift than a car, and it pivots around a point roughly a third of the way back from the bow, so the stern swings wide while the bow barely moves. On a single engine boat you also have prop walk, the tendency of the stern to slide sideways in reverse, which most people fight until someone shows them how to use it deliberately.

Long Beach is usually the best classroom of the six. Alamitos Bay covers 258 acres of protected water with marina basins, narrow channels and slow speed zones, which gives you calm space to learn in and realistic tight spots to progress into.
