Boat Charter in Los Angeles, CA, Choose the Right Harbour First

Los Angeles has no single boating harbour, which makes the first decision harder than the booking. Six harbours, each suited to a different kind of day. Tell us where your group is travelling from and what you want to do on the water. We will point you at the harbour that fits rather than the one that happens to be nearest.

Boat Charters for Los Angeles and the Surrounding Coast

We are based in Seal Beach, roughly twenty five miles from central Los Angeles, and we serve boaters across the county from a choice of harbours rather than a single home port. Guests come to us from the Westside and Venice, from Playa del Rey and El Segundo, from the South Bay, and from the harbour communities of San Pedro and Wilmington. Because Los Angeles has no single recreational boating centre, the practical question for anyone here is not whether to book a charter but which stretch of water to book it on. That is what this page is for.

Services Available Across Los Angeles

Wakesurfing Charters

Towed watersports need flat water and legal towing room, and in Los Angeles that means Long Beach. The breakwater completed in 1949 flattened the swell behind it, which is poor news for surfers and ideal for a wakesurf boat. Boards, ropes, vests and tubes are included.

Scuba Diving Charters

Certified divers get the most from launching where deep water is closest, which favours Dana Point in the south and San Pedro Bay for offshore structure. We supply the boat and surface support, and you bring certification, tanks and personal gear.

Boat Lessons

Where you learn should match where you will boat. Huntington Harbour is the gentlest introduction, Newport and Marina del Rey are demanding in the most useful way, and open water handling is best taught out of Dana Point.

Corporate Team Building Charters

Best served from Marina del Rey for Westside companies and Long Beach for South Bay and Orange County teams. Written quotes, invoicing, catering coordination and an agreed weather contingency are standard, and we plan around your travel time rather than ours.

Private Boat
Charters

Celebrations work almost anywhere, so the choice comes down to scenery and guest travel. Long Beach offers the Queen Mary and the Naples canals, Newport gives you seven residential islands, and Marina del Rey delivers sunset over Santa Monica Bay.

Why Is Booking a Boat in Los Angeles More Complicated Than Elsewhere?

Because the coastline is long, the traffic is real, and the harbours serve genuinely different purposes. Most cities have one harbour and one answer. Los Angeles County spans more than 4,700 square miles and 88 incorporated cities, so a family in the South Bay and a company in Playa Vista are looking at completely different practical options. There is a second wrinkle. The most famous waterfront in Los Angeles is industrial rather than recreational.

The Port of Los Angeles covers 7,500 acres across 43 miles of waterfront in San Pedro Bay and has been the busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere for the past twenty five years, handling 10.3 million containers in 2024. It is remarkable to look at and it is not where you charter a boat for a birthday. Recreational boating happens in the marinas alongside and south of it, which is why choosing a harbour is the first real decision.

How Many Angelenos Live Within Reach of a Charter Harbour?

Los Angeles County holds roughly 10.2 million residents across 88 incorporated cities, close to a quarter of California’s entire population, spread over about 4,751 square miles. The city of Los Angeles alone accounts for around 3.8 million of that. Very few of those people own a boat, and slip space is limited and expensive across every harbour on this coast, which is the structural reason charter demand here is so consistent.

Marina del Rey, the largest man made small craft harbour in North America, holds just over 4,600 slips serving a county of ten million. The gap between the number of people who want a day on the water and the number who have a way to get there is the entire market, and it is why a captained charter with equipment included tends to work out better than any route to ownership.

Which Los Angeles Area Harbour Should You Choose?

Each harbour we serve does something the others do not. The table below compares them on the three things that actually decide the booking: what the water suits, how far it is, and what the day feels like. Detailed pages for each are linked below the table.

Harbour Best For Water Character Notes
Long Beach Wakesurfing, celebrations, families Protected and flat behind the breakwater Our hub, strongest all round choice
Huntington Beach Cruising, lessons, calm family days Sheltered canals, warmer in summer Towing not permitted inside the harbour
Newport Beach Occasions, harbour scenery, corporate Busy, five knot limit throughout Most competitive charter market
Dana Point Wildlife, diving, open ocean days Real ocean, minutes from the slip Longer bookings suit the distance
Marina del Rey Corporate days, client events, sunsets Wide channels, eight basins Closest harbour to LAX
Los Angeles Deciding between the above Varies entirely by harbour Call us and we will advise

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and most people ask exactly this. Tell us three things: roughly where your group is travelling from, what you want to do on the water, and your date. That is enough for us to recommend a harbour and explain why. We would rather send you to the right water than take a booking that leaves your group disappointed.

Which Specific Harbours Do We Serve Around Los Angeles?

Each of the harbours below has its own page covering local conditions, rules and what a day there actually looks like. If you already know where you want to go, start there. If not, the table above is the quicker route.

We are based in Seal Beach and reach all five regularly, so the harbour you choose does not change the price. It only changes the kind of day you get.
